The Men’s Group Seminar: Design Thinking to Design Your Life: The Work of Bill Burnett

Jan 29, 2022 | Events

Co-author of the book Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life and director of the Life Design Lab at Stanford, Bill Burnett applies innovation methodology to the engineering of a “well-designed life.” Drawing from positive psychology and design techniques, Burnett has developed a set of guidelines, principles, and strategies for moving past faulty assumptions and rigid mindsets in order to be curious about, and ultimately design, new pathways. He champions an engineering point of view based on “ideating,” “prototyping,” and the evaluation of data. His approach also capitalizes on serendipity and the negotiation of emotional and rational decision-making. He emphasizes “connecting the dots” regarding who you are, what you believe in, and what you do in the world. In the next virtual meeting of the Men’s Group Seminar on Saturday, February 5, 2022 (10:15 to 11:30 AM), we will explore Burnett’s approach to life improvement and career identity. We will focus our discussion on Burnett’s TEDx Talk “5 Steps to Designing the Life You Want” and a podcast interview that elaborates his approach. Burnett’s article summarizing his primary design ideas and limiting life assumptions will also be considered.
