Young adults are trending toward marrying later in life, if at all, and are non-prioritizing becoming a parent. Prenups, cohabitating before marriage, and investing in career and financial security over and above finding “the right one” have reshaped traditional notions of intimacy and family. But are millennials actually onto something? For example, an expert on relationships from the Gottman Institute suggests that millennials are more oriented toward self-discovery through a series of long-term relationships which enable them to learn what they need and want before a final commitment. If this is actually the case, marriages may ultimately be more successful. Nevertheless, marriage rates among the millennial generation continue to fall, leading social commentators to observe a declining view of the institution of marriage as one that is outdated and no longer approached as an important life milestone. In the next meeting of the Relationship Group Seminar on Saturday, August 1, 2020 (11:45 AM to 1:00 PM), we will discuss millennials’ perspective on marriage and consider how these cultural shifts may influence, and even strengthen, relationships now and in the future.
