The Family in Crisis
Family crises rarely come from a single argument or event. In my work with families in Orange County, I often see that moments of open conflict reflect long-standing relational patterns that have been under strain for years. When these patterns finally erupt—often around aging parents, finances, inheritance, or shifting roles—families can feel polarized, overwhelmed, and unsure how to move forward. Family therapy provides a structured, evidence-based way to stabilize crisis and address the deeper dynamics driving the conflict.
I approach family therapy from a systems-oriented, psychodynamic perspective, which means I focus on relationships rather than assigning blame to any one person. Family distress is relational: rigid roles, unspoken rules, favoritism, and unresolved resentments shape how members interact across generations. Adult children and aging parents are especially vulnerable during these transitions, often experiencing heightened anxiety, guilt, defensiveness, or emotional cutoff. Therapy helps slow reactivity, clarify boundaries, and create space for more flexible and respectful communication.
During times of crisis, family therapy typically begins with stabilization. Early sessions focus on de-escalation, emotional safety, and reducing patterns of verbal escalation or emotional flooding. As stability improves, we work to understand the family’s long-term dynamics—how alliances formed, how conflict was managed or avoided, and how past injuries continue to influence present interactions. Insight is paired with emotional processing so that understanding leads to meaningful change, not just intellectual awareness.
I often integrate individual sessions alongside joint family work. This allows each family member to address anxiety, shame, or trauma privately while preparing for more productive conversations together. Research consistently shows that combining individual and family therapy leads to more durable outcomes in high-conflict families.
Family therapy does not aim to force agreement or quick solutions. Instead, it helps families develop emotional flexibility, clearer boundaries, and the ability to navigate conflict without rupture. Over time, families experience fewer crises, less intensity, and a greater capacity to relate to one another with honesty and respect—even in the face of difficult transitions.
