The Men’s Group Seminar: Creative Confidence

Feb 15, 2022 | Events

David Kelley is a Stanford professor, design engineer, founder of the consultancy IDEO, and co-author (along with his brother Tom Kelley) of Creative Confidence: Unleashing the Creative Potential Within Us All. Perhaps the Kelleys’ most influential contribution has been identifying the emotional, intellectual, and cultural obstacles to creativity and innovation, and formulating pathways to overcoming these obstacles. Their concepts have applicable value to multiple domains of living, both within and beyond the workplace. In the next virtual meeting of the Men’s Group Seminar on Saturday, February 19, 2022 (10:15 to 11:30 AM), we will explore the ideas of David and Tom Kelley. Our focus will be David Kelley’s TED talk, “How to Build Your Creative Confidence.” In addition, we will review their Harvard Business Review article “Reclaim Your Creative Confidence” in which “fears of creative breakthrough” are described, including the “fear of being judged.” Other concepts we will discuss include “the failure paradox” and “guided mastery,” which are important elements of the Kelleys’ approach to transitioning from an analytical to a creative mindset.
